PRESS RELEASE

“Cold Forest” (“Rock Gardens”)

The current project is another example in the series dedicated to light and motion, space and scale, content and its meaning through various art media.
The exhibition stage employs various light sources for establishing a sacred space within his glowing video-sculptural installation. Lights and projected videos are shaped in Mandala-like animated drawings, changing patterns and complexity with every moment.

Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means "circle". Most mandalas are concentric diagrams and have spiritual and ritual significance. The symbolic nature of these circles can help one to access progressively deeper levels of the unconscious, ultimately assisting the viewer in experiencing a mystical sense of unity with the outer space.

The mix of white illumination and colored light confer an identity to the background of the installation. Concentric light illumination is a key element in emphasizing every object within the installation. Every video and light source concentrates on one sculpture at a time. The assembly of tree sculptures, wherein silhouettes sometimes look like mythical creatures, is like a crowd. Gathered together they are a unified entity but individually have their own personalities and characters.

The large-scale steel figurines stand in light video circles. Each moment video environment changes its color, its shadows and reflections on surrounding walls and close by sculptures; the created effect reminds one of a symphony played by many instruments, each with its own part and tone, coming together to make a chorus of sounds – lights.

As opposed to ever-present daylight, artificial light renders objects visible in a targeted manner. Light communicates meaning and allows for the intuitive perception of a space. Sculptural objects in the art installations are arranged in compositions with surrounding them rocks. From aside the sharp rocks and smooth stones look like shining metal ingots.

From the earliest times places surrounded by natural rocks were regarded as dwelling places of the gods. The composition of the installation is orchestrated in a way so that all the artworks symbolize and visually refer to elements of nature.

Behind the seeming complexity of the installation there is a simple plot of a fairy tale about the bird that cannot be contained in a cage; the cage that lights up and awakes with the sounds of living nature. It is about the misery and grandeur of one artist’s travel through life and light.

The new project is thematically linked to previous film and light works - “Deconstructed Reality” (2004),  “Vertigo” (2005), “Nebulas”.(2007),  and “Visor’d” (2008).
